Subject: Creating an Effective Thesis Statement

Dear Student,

If you would like to succeed in your academic journey, one of the skills you will need to learn is the ability to write an effective thesis statement.
The thesis statement is what separates an academic paper from social commentary, a news article, or a blog post. For many students, developing a thesis statement can be a considerable challenge.
But what is a thesis statement?
In simple terms, a thesis statement consists of one or two sentences placed at the end of the introduction presenting the leading argument in your essay. It should provide the reader with an idea of what they will find in the paper.
The thesis statement of your paper tells the reader about the problem or solution you are going to be addressing in the essay. It is based on evidence as opposed to your personal opinion.

For a thesis statement to be effective, it needs to have the following qualities:

  • Provides a direct answer to the question the essay addresses
  • Delivers a specific understanding of the subject and not the subject itself. This point comes from the belief that scholars interpret knowledge in different ways and present evidence to support their interpretation.
  • Makes a claim that can be debated as opposed to popular opinion or a fact

Once you’ve been able to create an effective thesis statement, the rest of your paper is dedicated to supporting it. You will now gather evidence and use it to persuade the reader that your thesis statement is logical.
