Suffering From Writer’s Block? Try This

Dear Student,

So you haven’t started writing a paper that’s due in a few days? The paper was allocated to you weeks ago, and every time you sit down to write, you always end up doing something else like browsing the internet or reading statuses on social media.

You dread starting the essay because you don’t know what to write or are afraid that you may not be good enough to write the paper.

If the above sentences describe you, then you are suffering from writer’s block. This is a condition where you are unable to create new original writing. You feel stuck, especially in the introduction.

The good news is that you can take some measures to deal with writer’s block. Let’s look at some of them:

Do Some Casual Research
In academic writing, writer’s block can result from not having enough information on the subject you want to write about. To deal with this challenge, you can take some time to read casually about the subject to get an idea of the prevailing thinking in the area. Talk to experts in the area if you know any. Watch videos if they are available.

Part of your research should involve looking at papers similar to yours to see how others have approached the subject.

Create an Outline
Start by jotting down the leading ideas that will form part of your paper. Use the question to determine the most important ideas to be addressed. If a marking rubric exists, look at it also to see what you should emphasize.

When you have an outline, it’s easier to decide which ideas will fit into which area. With a proper plan, you can also identify gaps that need to be filled in further research.

Just Write
Once you have done your research and got enough insights to put something together, start writing. Don’t wait for a time when you feel ready, just start writing.

Even if it feels as if you are not writing to the standard you want, keep on writing. It’s easier to correct and edit something that’s already there than to start from nothing.

Start with writing the simple staff that you understand. You can add more complicated ideas over time as you better understand the subject you are writing about.
