Struggling with APA 7th Addition – Here are the Main Changes
Dear Student,
One of the most frustrating aspects of being a student is that you always have to follow a specific referencing technique. This can leave you wondering why you need to reference and why it has to be done in a specific way.
The University of Leeds explains why referencing is important. It writes, “It puts your work in context, demonstrates the breadth and depth of your research, and acknowledges other people’s work.”
One of the most common referencing conventions is the APA style, and we are currently on the 7th edition. In this email, I want to summarise the main changes you need to watch out for when using APA 7th referencing.
- Forget the publisher location: Up to APA 6th, you were expected to include the publisher’s location in your final list of references. The 7th edition only requires the name of the publisher.
- Summerise more than two authors from the beginning: In the earlier APA versions, you were expected to list up to three authors when introducing them for the first time in in-text references. In the 7th edition, you are only expected to list up to two authors. If there are three authors, you need to shorten the in-text reference from the first time you use it using the surname and initial of the first listed author followed by et al and the year of publication.
- Provide surnames of up to 20 authors: The 7th edition expects you to list all the surnames and initials of up to 20 authors in the final list of references.
- Ditch the phrase “Retrieved from”: When providing the URL where a source is located online, you no longer need to include the phrase retrieved from or the date you retrieved the information.
- Don’t include details of the format for e-books: If you provide details of an e-book in the final list of references, do not include the format such as [Kindle version]; instead, just provide the name of the publisher.
