Formatting in Harvard Style

Dear Student,

Do you sometimes get an assignment that needs to be formatted in Harvard style, and you have no idea where to start? You are not the only one; many students struggle with the details of academic writing using different formats.

In this email, we present the essential elements of formatting in Harvard style. However, it’s important to note that different institutions may have different adaptations of the Harvard style. This is why you need to be clear about which style your university prefers.

However, there are some essential elements that you need to know as a starting point.

The Title Page
Most papers written in Harvard style will have a title page. This page should have thefollowing details:

  • A running header should be in the header section, flash right. It contains the title of the paper and the page number. If the title is too long, reduce it. The running header should be on every page of your paper.
  • About halfway down the page, you should have the full title in CAPS.
  • Go down a few lines and put the name of the course, professor, school, city where the school is located, and the date (These should appear one below the other.

Headings
Another critical issue is that of the headings.

  • Title: Is in title case, cantered, and not bolded.
  • Level 1 Heading: Is the same as the title but differs in that it is bolded.
  • Level 2 Heading: Is in bold, flush left, and written in title case.
  • Level 3 Heading: Write in bold, in sentence case, and indented.
  • Level 4 Heading: Write in italics, in bold, indented, and in sentence case.
  • Level 5 Heading: Is not in bold, it is written in sentence case and italics.

Referencing
Another area that you will need to focus on is both in-text and final list of references. Please see examples of how this should be done here.
